Eating & Gaining Weight

Truman has been a very good boy today. He passed another small stool this morning, so breast milk was started again at noon. They are trying a new feeding protocol to try to keep him moving (they think he still hasn't passed everything). Instead of 1CC every four hours, they are going to feed him 2CCs every six hours. The thought is that maybe a greater volume of food with more time to digest might help. We'll find out at 6 p.m. how he did.

He also has now been off his blood pressure medication (Dopamine) for more than 24 hours and is keeping his pressure up quite well. He was also on room air or within five percent or so during my whole mid-day visit.

Nurse Bev said he's developed quite a repuation in NICU for being a feisty baby and for being one who does not like a wet diaper. His kidneys work so well that they moved up to a bigger, more absorbent diaper even though it's huge on him. She said that's a really good sign that he's showing some personality at this stage.

Bev also said he has filled out some since she saw him a week ago. I've been thinking that the last couple of days, but I thought I must be crazy and just getting more used to seeing such a tiny baby. She assured me he's not quite so skinny as he was at birth. It could be because he gained an ounce and a half yesterday!! He's now up to 1 pound, 7 ounces. Hopefully, he can stay on the feeds this time and accelerate that growth.

Awesome. So glad to hear about the progress. And I'm not surprised to hear that little Truman is a fighter...given his mom. She's one tough cookie too. =)

Yeah!! That's so exciting. I'm so glad he's eating and growing (And not beeping so much - yeah for no dopamine and more room air)! I'm so proud of him! Maybe he just needed a pep talk.

I already thought he looked fatter last weekend than in the early pictures, but I thought maybe it was fluid. His skin wasn't nearly as wrinkly I thought.

Grow, Truman, grow!

Hello, Kara. I came to Truman's blog through a link in a friend's blog (she's pregnant and her baby is due in December, as Truman was) and I've been following his development daily. I just want you to know that I'm praying for him very strongly here in Portugal and I'm sending a lot of good energies to you and Ben too. Keep us informed, please...

Hi all! Whilst my preemie wasn't as early as Truman, I can relate to your roller coaster. I just caught up on his story so far, and my thoughts are with you as I can always imagine the same walk into the NICU, the same worries and the same wishes. The pep talk about eatting and pooping is always good! I spent many hours whispering to Presleigh about how it would be a good idea to do it...just do it and get it over with! *laugh*

Keep up the good work Truman!

I just want to say that I had a strange thought while browising you heart warming blog.
Truman, the name, will mean alot for his WHOLE LIFE.
I instantly thought "true man".
A "True Man" will fight it out in any struggle and when he wins this battle he will be just that, a tiny, miracle, "TRUE MAN!!"
How inspiring this story is!!!!
I have a circle of women in Nevada praying for you daily!

That is great news!! Isn't it funny how your perception of things change? You probably never thought you'd be thrilled that your baby was pooping and peeing.

Keep up those messy diapers!
